The Complete Ethiopian Bible

Eighty-eight books, as the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has kept them: the Book of Enoch entire, the Book of Jubilees, the Maccabees and the whole of the Old and New Testaments — texts the West set aside and Ge’ez alone preserved.

Status

The three English volumes are typeset and finished. They are not on sale yet — publication on Amazon is a matter of weeks. Nothing on this page is for sale today, and we would rather say so than take your money for a book you cannot hold.

Why this canon is different

Christianity reached Ethiopia at the beginning of the fourth century, before the councils that fixed the canons of the West. The Ethiopian Church formed its scriptures according to choices of its own, and then copied them by hand, without interruption, for more than a thousand years.

Several of these books survive complete in Ge’ez and nowhere else. The Book of Enoch, quoted by the epistle of Jude and then lost to the West for a millennium, exists entire only in the Ethiopian manuscripts — of the Greek there are fragments, of the Aramaic only shreds found at Qumran. The Book of Jubilees shares that fate. Without the Ethiopian copyists, these texts would simply have disappeared.

This edition gathers that corpus in English, established from translations in the public domain, arranged in the order of the Ethiopian canon. It is not an official liturgical translation and replaces no authorised text: it is an instrument of study and reading.
